After World War II Russia and the United States were known as the "Super Powers", because both of the nations had very strong economies, they each had overpowering military, and international political power. The reasoning behind both Russia and the United States was World War II. The United States gained all of its financial and economical strengths and their world affairs from its status as an "economical power" After World War II ended there was a conference in Postdam, Germany have peace treaties passed. All of the countries that fought against Hitler lost territory and had to pay reparations to the Allies. Germany and Berlin were also divided into 4 different parts. The different zones were then controlled by Great Britain, the United States, France, and the Soviet Union. The 3 Western Allies and the Soviet constantly disagreed on just about everything, so due to their disagreeing, Germany was divided into 2 different countries, East Germany, which had a complete Communist Government, and West Germany, which was a democratic state. Berlin was also then divided into East Berlin and West Berlin. Austria was also taken over by the Four Allies from 1945 all the way until 1955.
